Welcome to 2019!

by Vanessa Laurey.

Welcome to 2019! This past weekend we had our Vision Sunday with our anointing service, and the announcement of the focus and theme over us this year:

Matthew 5: 14-16 Jesus says to his disciples:

You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Jesus, the Light Who Has Come.

Jesus is the light that was to come into the world. In the chapter before in Matthew 4, Jesus quotes the prophetic announcement of Isaiah to say this word has now reached its fulfilment.

I am here, and I am the light of the world.

Jesus then moves into ministry, and begins to not only teach but to demonstrate what being the light means for the world. He begins to teach and heal and deliver people from sickness and spiritual darkness.

As the light, He casts out all darkness he comes in contact with.

Darkness cannot stand in the presence of Jesus the light!

We are the Light.

Jesus’ famous sermon on the mount is delivered, and He rounds up the ways of the kingdom known as the beatitudes by making strong declarations over His disciples.

ˆYou are the light of the world…”

Jesus Himself is not only the fulfilment of Isaiah’s word, but now He passes this declaration and reality onto His followers.

I am the light that has come to cast out all darkness, to do the will and works of my Heavenly Father, and now if you follow me, you are the light too!

Don’t Hide Your Light.

He compares their lives to lamps in a house. You don’t put on a lamp and then set it under a bowl, or put it in a cupboard…

No! you put it right in the middle of the house so everyone can see!

This is what it is to be carriers of light, you are to shine and be present and allow the light of the truth be seen by all you come into contact with. Now that Jesus has come to live inside of you, don’t hide it away, what good is that? You defeat the purpose!

He says: if we will do these good deeds for people, they will ultimately begin to also see the Father and begin to worship Him, and come into a saving knowledge of the Son He sent.

Take Up The Call.

This year it is about taking up this declaration and call of responsibility and simply following in Jesus’ footsteps. The light of a disciple is evident, because we don’t live according to the patterns of this darkened world. We are a transformed (and continually transforming people, Romans 12:1-3) people who cannot help but stand out because we live according to the truths of the Word of God.

In all aspects of your life in 2019 you are able to shine your light.

In your home life, in your neighbourhood, in dropping the kids to school, in the work place, in the streets, in the stores, wherever you are, there is light in this world.

So Be Bold and Be Blessed!

Being bold and sharing the truth of Jesus when people ask why you have hope, joy, peace, patience, a great perspective etc. is also part of the call. When people ask, take the opportunity to share the good news of Jesus in your life. The word teaches us to always be ready to share the reason for the hope that we have! (1 Peter 3:15)

And watch how others - perhaps slowly- but surely, come to also know and worship Jesus, the true Light of the World.
